What is After Weight Loss Surgery?

Visit Dr. Christopher Khorsandi in Las Vegas, NV for after weight loss surgery. If you are ready to take the last steps to your weight loss goals, you may consider loose skin removal surgery with our board-certified plastic surgeon. After weight loss surgery is a follow-up cosmetic surgery for those who have lost around 100 pounds with or without bariatric surgery. During weight loss, as the body shrinks, the skin becomes noticeably loose, especially around the areas of the abdomen, breasts, arms, legs, buttocks, and face. After weight loss surgery removes the excess skin and tightens the underlying muscles for a toned, firm look.

Losing weight is a noteworthy accomplishment that you should take pride in; at the same time, weight loss may additionally bring on its own concerns, like hanging skin and stubborn pockets of fat. Post-weight loss surgery in Las Vegas, NV at VIP Plastic Surgery can allow you to finish your new look with a number of extra advantages, which include:

  • Removes extra stretched, baggy skin
  • Helps to reduce skin inflammation and rashes
  • Suitable for different parts of the body
  • Beneficial for mobility and physical activity
  • Helps straighten posture
  • Reshapes your build for a more balanced, harmonious shape
  • Creates an improved, more desirable effect
  • Lifts and firms skin
  • Gives a boost to self-confidence and self-image

Am I a Good Candidate for After Weight Loss Surgery?

Weight loss patients often realize the need for skin removal surgery when they start to experience:

  • Sagging breasts
  • Loose folds of skin around the abdomen
  • Hanging skin and fat pockets around the hips
  • Sagging skin and excessive wrinkling around the buttocks area
  • Hanging skin from the inner thigh to the knee area
  • “Bat wings” or loose skin on the underside of the arms
  • “Turtle neck” or loose skin around the neck

Many of these conditions are inevitable after any major weight loss because skin, when stretched for a long time, loses its elasticity and fails to shrink back as the body becomes smaller.

I decided to visit Dr. Khorsandi after doing some research online. After the initial consultation, I felt comfortable and confident enough with Dr Khorsandi to proceed with scheduling surgery. My surgery was to be in two, or possibly three stages. I am a 35 year old male who lost a lot of weight (naturally) about 12 years ago and have remained extremely health conscious and active ever since. Dr. Khorsandi recommended a belt lipectomy procedure in response to my areas of concern. If you know anything about this procedure, you are aware that it is very a extensive and time consuming surgery. This procedure lasted roughly 7 hours and required a few months of healing before I could resume my normal gym activity. It is now 14 months later and I'm extremely happy with everything. Scars are minimal and I couldn't imagine better results. The care and attention of Dr. Khorsandi and his staff is amazing. I had no problem getting a hold of him whether he was at his office, home or traveling (which I needed to a few times during the first few months of healing). My second area of concern was my chest (which had not retracted fully from weight loss). Dr. Khorsandi performed two procedures, the final one being two weeks ago. Again, I couldn't imagine better results. He has reshaped it and reduced areas which have lost elasticity leaving me with a chest that I never thought I'd have. Note that I'm very particular and had higher than normal expectations to begin with. I was very nervous in the beginning stages only to be relieved and happy at the end. If he can do this well on such extensive and detailed procedures as he did with mine, I can easily see why he has such excellent reviews in all other areas. Chris 2/12/15

Can I Combine Multiple Surgeries?

After weight loss surgeries can remove excess skin, resulting in a tighter and firmer appearance. In order to minimize the risks of complications, many surgeons recommend grouping certain treatments together, such as the lower or upper body. Below, you'll find examples of how a surgeon may group certain surgeries.

The upper body: Potential procedures that can be combined with after weight loss surgery include:

  • Liposuction
  • Breast lift
  • Tummy tuck
  • Arm lift

The lower body: After weight loss surgery may be integrated with procedures, such as:

  • Liposuction
  • Butt lift
  • Thigh lift
  • Lower body lift

What Should I Expect Before and After Surgery?

After weight loss surgery is considered a major operation in which the patient is put under general anesthesia. The number of hours it takes to complete this surgery varies, but on average it is between 4-7 hours. Overnight stay in the hospital is required so that patients can be closely monitored. While scarring is a part of this surgical process, a skilled plastic surgeon will make every effort to ensure that the incisions are kept as inconspicuous as possible. Post-surgery care is also prescribed so that the scars will heal properly. For many patients, the results after surgery are so positive and impactful, they are life-changing.

Typical body parts that are addressed for surgery are the abdomen, buttocks, upper thighs, breasts, arms and neck. The most common areas for improvement include the breasts and abdominal area, which can usually be done at the same time. During the course of losing weight, the areas of loose skin will become more obvious and it is usually around this time that patients begin consulting with a plastic surgeon.
