Three Common Reasons Why People Chose Revision Rhinoplasty

Most of us are familiar with the primary motivations for rhinoplasty surgery, including enhancing the appearance of the nose and/or improving its function. One thing that is less frequently discussed, however, is why certain patients pursue a revision rhinoplasty. At VIP Plastic Surgery, top Las Vegas, NV board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi is committed to helping men and women get the cosmetic and functional results they deserve through a comprehensive range of nasal surgeries, including revision rhinoplasty. Here, you’ll learn more about what a revision rhinoplasty is, what it does, and why a patient may want or need this popular procedure.

What is a revision rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty is a second or subsequent procedure performed after initial nasal surgery. Revision rhinoplasty may be performed fairly soon after the original procedure or, in many cases, is performed several years later.

Why would someone need a revision rhinoplasty?

While there are virtually endless motivations for a revision rhinoplasty, there are a handful that are more common than others. Most frequently, revision rhinoplasty is performed for one of the following three reasons:

1. Patients are unhappy with the results of their first rhinoplasty

Without question, the most common reason for a revision rhinoplasty is to improve or correct the work that was done during the initial nose surgery. In some cases, the original surgeon “botched” the nose job, while other patients may simply feel that their new nose doesn’t look the way they’d like it to. In either scenario, it is critical that patients considering revision rhinoplasty surgery have realistic expectations for their results and understand that their idea of perfection is not always attainable. Additionally, revision rhinoplasty is often more complicated than the original procedure, in part due to scar tissue, which may limit what can be accomplished during surgery.

2. It is difficult or uncomfortable to breathe through their nose

An initial rhinoplasty may affect the internal structures of the nose and result in a deviated septum, collapsed nostril, and other complications that can make it difficult for the patient to breathe fully or comfortably. With revision rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Khorsandi can help to restore proper airflow, allowing patients to once again breathe freely.

3. Their nose has changed

In most cases, the results of a rhinoplasty last for many years, if not indefinitely. However, certain factors may cause a patient’s nose to change after their original rhinoplasty. These include:

  • Aging
  • Trauma/broken nose
  • First rhinoplasty was performed too young (before the nose was fully developed)

How long do I have to wait to get a revision rhinoplasty?

Because the final results of a rhinoplasty can take up to 6 – 12 months to become fully apparent, patients are typically encouraged to wait at least one year before pursuing revision rhinoplasty. During your initial consultation for functional or cosmetic nose surgery in Las Vegas, Dr. Khorsandi will discuss your concerns and goals, evaluate the results of your original procedure, and determine if and when it may be appropriate for you to schedule a revision rhinoplasty.
