What is a Scar Revision?

A very common skin issue, scars can be located anywhere on the body and face. In some cases, a scar is a reminder of a wound that once existed or another condition that caused a disruption to the skin’s surface. While most scars are not a concern, some scars, such as keloid scars, can be very unappealing and unsightly.  Depending on where the scar is located and its condition, scar revision treatment may be needed to improve its appearance. Las Vegas, NV board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi offers scar revision treatment using a variety of methods, including the advanced Sensus SRT-100™ for keloids at VIP Plastic Surgery. This is an effective and lasting treatment that works to reduce the size and improve the appearance of your scar, allowing you to feel more confident in your appearance.

Keloid Scars

There are different types of scars that can be cosmetically treated with surgery or laser. The type you have can dictate the available techniques to correct it. The most common scars include superficial scars, hypertrophic scars, and contracture scars (usually caused by a burn). However, Keloid scars are the most complex to treat. Keloids are actually non-malignant, chronic tumors that form at the site of skin trauma. They are larger,  claw-like growths on the skin and can often be painful. Keloid removal can be difficult. While some may believe they have to live with their keloid, there are viable options to finally remove them for good. At our Las Vegas, NV plastic surgery center, the Sensus SRT technology uses superficial radiation therapy, which is a highly effective keloid removal treatment. In fact, it boasts a cure rate of more than 94 percent. This is very good news for those who are either genetically prone to keloids or certain ethnicities where keloids are seen often, including Latinos, African Americans, and Asians.

Ideal Candidates

Individuals who have a keloid scar can be considered for this treatment. Patients should be in good health and not undergoing radiation therapy for another medical condition. While many patients live with these types of scars, large unsightly keloids that cause one to feel self-conscious and insecure should have the condition looked at to see if Sensus SRT is right for you. While most scar treatments are designed to improve the appearance of an existing scar, the Sensus SRT has been proven to dramatically reduce all aspects of keloids, creating a softer, flat, natural-looking surface.

About the Treatment

In some cases, surgery to revise scars is needed. If a scar requires surgery, this can be performed by Dr. Khorsandi as an outpatient procedure. A local anesthetic is usually used, depending on the extent of the procedure. For thick or bumpy scars, a shave excision can be done to level and even out the scar. Scars that are larger and raised may be reduced in size using an elliptical incision, which removes the scar and some of the tissue and skin around it. For scars that were caused by poor closure, this can create a dramatic improvement.

Of all scars, keloids are different. Surgery has always been used to remove keloids, however, in the majority of patients, this non-malignant tumor has a very high reoccurrence rate. Now, when surgical removal of a keloid is followed by superficial radiation therapy, the chance that the keloid can or will come back significantly drops. In some cases, as low as 10 percent or not at all. The SRT-100 delivers a precise, calibrated dose of therapy that only goes skin deep. This level of radiation safely destroys the cells that form keloids, which keeps the skin smooth as the incision heals. Some patients may undergo a series of treatments, depending on the keloid and incision site.

What to Expect

After a scar revision procedure, wound care is the most important component of the post-treatment process. Dr. Christopher Khorsandi or a member of his staff will give very specific instructions and suggestions to help you take care of your treatment area so that optimal results can appear. For many scars, the area will reveal a lighter, smoother surface.
