What is Lip Augmentation?

Whether you have naturally thin lips or you are noticing less fullness in your lips as you get older, surgical or nonsurgical lip augmentation may help create a more shapely and full mouth. Surgical lip augmentation may be accomplished with a fat transfer, silicone implants, or a vermilion advancement (lip lift) to obtain the shape you want. Surgical lip augmentation can provide amazing results that are long-lasting. For nonsurgical lip augmentation, there are many injectable fillers that can temporarily plump the lips for a fuller look. If you are interested in learning more about surgical or nonsurgical augmentation, contact VIP Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, NV to schedule an initial consultation. Plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi and his skilled team will discuss all your choices and develop your personal lip augmentation treatment plan.

  • Lip implants
For the most lasting results, silicone implants may be added to the upper and/or lower lips to enhance the volume and shape of your mouth.
  • Fat transfer
By transferring fat from your body with liposuction and adding the processed fat back into the lips, you can get natural-looking improvements.
  • Lip lift/vermilion advancement
This is a surgical technique that adjusts the borders of the upper and/or lower lips to expand the area and shape of the mouth.
  • Dermal fillers
Injectables, including JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®, can add temporary volume to the lips and reduce the visibility of lip lines.

Who is a Candidate for lip augmentation?

Nonsurgical or surgical lip enhancement can help give you more voluminous lips and a better mouth shape. Depending on your goals, you may decide on lip augmentation surgery for longer-lasting results or injectable fillers to avoid recovery time. It can be helpful to start with nonsurgical fillers to understand how different amounts of volume appear and then get lip augmentation surgery. Ideal candidates for lower and/or upper lip enhancement at VIP Plastic Surgery:

  • Have thin lips naturally or have lost lip volume with age
  • Have uneven or asymmetrical lips
  • Want to balance the overall appearance of their face
  • Have general good health

How does lip augmentation work?

The approach taken during the procedure will vary, depending on the chosen course of treatment:

  • Lip implants
A thin incision is created at the corner of the lips so the implant(s) can be inserted below the skin. It may take 1 – 3 weeks for the implant(s) to settle into the final position and any swelling to subside; however, implants in the lips will give you improvements that are long-lasting.
  • Fat transfer
With a fat transfer, liposuction will extract fat from your thighs or other areas of your body that have excess fat. The fat will be cleaned and re-injected into your lips until the desired fullness is reached. Since some fat may be reabsorbed after the surgery, your lips may be filled a little more to compensate for this loss. Lip augmentation with a fat transfer may be repeated over time to enhance or sustain your lips, but generally, your results will last for several years.
  • Lip lift/vermilion advancement
For this surgical lip enhancement, a very small incision is made on the upper and/or lower line of the lip. A small area of skin outside the mouth will be removed so the lips can be stretched to replace the excised skin and stitched in place. This lip advancement surgery gives long-lasting results that improve the size and shape of the lips.
  • Dermal fillers
Minimally invasive lip augmentation can be done with injectable dermal fillers, such as Restylane or JUVÉDERM. Injections can be performed in one of our treatment rooms as an outpatient procedure. Based on the brand of dermal filler used, a local anesthetic may be in the formula or a numbing cream can be applied on the lips before the treatment. Once your lips are cleaned, several injections will be administered in the selected areas of the lips and then the filler will be massaged to create even results. You should be allowed to leave immediately after your treatment to resume your normal activities.

What can I Expect after lip augmentation?

It's important to pay attention to all aftercare instructions given by our team to achieve optimal healing and the best results. After either a surgical or nonsurgical lip augmentation, your mouth will most likely feel sore or tender for a few days. With a fat transfer, you should expect the area where the fat was extracted to be tender also. Cold compresses and nonprescription pain medications are suggested to alleviate any inflammation and discomfort. The results of nonsurgical lip augmentation may be visible anywhere from 3 – 12 months based on the brand selected for the treatment. Surgical lip augmentation will provide lasting improvements, but the natural aging process will continue and can alter your results over time. Lip augmentation FAQ

Can I get the lips of a specific celebrity?
Many patients come in and request the specific lips of a celebrity. Bringing in photos of what you want can help Dr. Khorsandi understand your goals; however, it may be unrealistic to create the shape and appearance of another person. During your consultation, Dr. Khorsandi will listen to your goals before discussing your choices (implants, a fat transfer, or dermal fillers) for lip augmentation. From there, he will work with you to create your personal treatment plan.

Should I get implants, a fat transfer, or fillers?
Depending on your specific wants, Dr. Khorsandi will help you choose between dermal fillers, a fat transfer, and implants for your augmentation procedure. If you are unsure about which option you want or nervous about an invasive procedure, injectable fillers might be a better option. During your initial consultation, Dr. Khorsandi can discuss the pros and cons of all your options so you can decide which one you want.

Is lip augmentation reversible?
Typically, patients are very happy with their results. Although, if you are unhappy with your outcomes, you can opt to have your implants taken out. If you're uncertain about lip implants, Dr. Khorsandi might recommend dermal fillers as they're less invasive. With injectable fillers, the formula will eventually absorb into your body over time, which means that your lips will naturally become smaller.
