Contact UsWhat is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia, male breast enlargement, is a psychologically traumatizing medical condition that can interfere with the social interaction of the men who suffer from it. Male breast reduction surgery, offered by Las Vegas, NV board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Christopher Khorsandi, is a medical treatment for gynecomastia, and it represents the fifth most common plastic surgery procedure performed on men in the United States. Men don’t want to hide their chests under clothing and limit their life activities due to gynecomastia. Many men who suffer from gynecomastia choose to restrict their exposure at beaches, swimming pools, the gym and even their own personal relationships.
Common Gynecomastia Causes
HORMONAL IMBALANCE
The most common cause of gynecomastia is an underlying hormonal issue. Throughout puberty, hormone levels surge to new levels, which leads to the growth of the body and maturation of the sex organs. Testosterone leads to male characteristics while estrogen induces female traits in the body. During this time an imbalance may occur. With either low testosterone or elevated estrogen levels, the development of female-like breast tissue or gynecomastia can occur. As men approach their sixties, testosterone levels decrease again, resulting in possible breast development.
OTHER CAUSES
Another cause of Gynecomastia is due to the use of certain drugs, especially anabolic steroids. Under rare conditions, male breast enlargement may arise from hormone-secreting tumors. Men with very high rates of female breast cancer in their families may be at increased risk for developing tumors. There is another condition, called pseudogynecomastia, which is not true gynecomastia. This condition arises in men who have had significant weight gain. Pseudogynecomastia is first treated with a weight loss regimen and may correct itself.

Surgical Technique
Fortunately, the surgical treatment of gynecomastia is highly successful, giving excellent and long lasting aesthetic results. Treatment commonly consists of liposuction combined with surgical gland excision. Incisions are made around the edge of the areola and may be extended in some circumstances. Surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia and can take between 1 and 3 hours. Patients tend to return to work within 3 to 5 days and can return to exercise within 4 to 6 weeks. Compression garments are essential to reduce swelling, and are recommended for 6 weeks post operatively.
Expected Cost
Depending on the complexity of the surgery, patients can expect to pay around $6,500 for male breast reduction surgery. The cost varies based on whether the patient requires liposuction, skin tightening or nipple repositioning.

Do I Have Gynecomastia?
During the initial consultation, Dr. Khorsandi will be able to determine whether the patient has gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia, which is an enlargement of the fat deposits in the breast tissue, through physical examination or lab results. Both conditions can be treated with liposuction, however, the surgeon will recommend a healthy diet and exercise prior to surgery.
Will My Pecs Be Noticeable?
Unfortunately, gynecomastia hides the chest muscles under layers of breast tissue. With male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Khorsandi will remove all excess fat and breast tissue so the pectoral muscles become more visible. He will recommend a healthy diet and exercise program to tone and strengthen their chest muscles for a natural appearance.
Do I Need Lipo?
Yes. Because liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure for removing excess fat, most surgeons will recommend liposuction before any other procedure. However, Dr. Khorsandi will cover all surgical options with the patient during the initial consultation.
Will There Be Scarring?
Dr. Khorsandi will make every effort to keep scarring minimal. In most cases, the liposuction scars will be minimal around the areola.
