What is hyaluronidase?

Las Vegas, NV board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi believes every patient deserves to have the best outcome when it comes to his or her filler treatments. Injecting fillers to create a certain desired look takes skill and an artistic approach. For this reason, Dr. Khorsandi performs all of his own injections so that he can continue to tweak and perfect the dosage amounts per the patient’s needs. Sometimes, Dr. Khorsandi sees patients who have experienced undesirable results following a dermal filler injection from another practitioner. These poor results could be caused from using the wrong filler product, or using too much in one location. Individuals that come to VIP Plastic Surgery seeking improvement may be candidates for hyaluronidase.

Am I A Candidate For Hyaluronidase?

The best candidates for a hyaluronidase treatment from Dr. Khorsandi include men and women who have had dermal filler injections made with hyaluronic acid and are not happy with the results. Dermal fillers made with hyaluronic acid include Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, Perlane, and BELOTERO. Whether too much filler was injected, the wrong filler was used, or you simply don't like the results, if you are in good overall health, you are typically a good candidate. People who have had other types of dermal fillers that do not use hyaluronic acid are NOT candidates for this procedure.

How it works

Hyaluronidase is considered a reversal agent for hyaluronic acid-based fillers. This includes fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane and Belotero. Hyaluronidase is essentially a compounded enzyme that acts as a dissolvent, which causes the breakdown of hyaluronic acid. When injected, it can help even out a poor injection to create a smoother result, or remove a filler that has been placed incorrectly. Many times, the dosage used is small, just enough to create the subtle result the patient desired to begin with.

After Your Injections

Hyaluronidase, just like any derma filler, is injected right into the area where the filler needs to be dissolved or tweaked. Lidocaine is used to help numb the area in order to help control any discomfort. Patients may bruise from treatment, but this lasts for just a few days. Patients will be able to see visible improvement and results within the first 1-2 days.

Expected Cost

Luckily, a round hyaluronidase is not as pricy as the initial round of injection medication. The average cost is about $100-$200 per injection.

What fillers qualify?

Patients who are not happy with their filler treatment with products that do not contain hyaluronic acid are not candidates for Hyaluronidase. Dr. Khorsandi will assess the filler results and consult on the best approach to remove it. This may include a short surgery to open the skin and surgically remove the product.

Is hyaluronidase safe?

Hyaluronidase is generally considered safe when administered by qualified healthcare professionals, like those at VIP Plastic Surgery. Common side effects like redness or swelling at the injection site are usually temporary. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, so it's essential to consult with a member of our Las Vegas, NV team to ensure hyaluronidase is appropriate for your needs.

Can hyaluronidase be used for all types of fillers?

Hyaluronidase specifically targets hyaluronic acid, so it is only effective on fillers from this substance. Many popular dermal fillers are based on hyaluronic acid and can be dissolved by hyaluronidase. However, fillers made from other materials, such as calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid, are not affected by hyaluronidase.

Does the effect of hyaluronidase last forever?

The effect of hyaluronidase itself is temporary; however, the dissolution of hyaluronic acid fillers by hyaluronidase is permanent. If desired, fillers can be re-injected after the effects have settled.
