How Many Treatments Of FUE Hair Restoration Will I Need?

When it comes to aging, almost nothing is more frustrating than hair loss. Thinning hair or male pattern baldness can actually begin to occur at a relatively young age for many people, and it typically gets progressively worse over time. With few options other than covering up under a hat, hair loss can be a devastating problem to face. There are a number of over-the-counter products available today that promise to promote natural, thick hair growth, but many of them are ineffective, inconsistent, or unable to give you the same kind of results that are possible in a qualified plastic surgeon’s office.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi, Chief of Plastic Surgery at VIP Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, NV, is proud to offer permanent hair restoration using the revolutionary FUE, or follicular unit extraction, technique. This exciting procedure can truly be life changing.

What is FUE hair restoration?

Follicular unit extraction is a minimally invasive hair restoration technique that uses a punch tool to extract individual units, or grafts, of 1-4 hair follicles each. Dr. Khorsandi uses the state-of-the-art SAFE Graft technology for his FUE procedures. Follicular unit extraction differs from the traditional “strip” hair restoration method, also called FUT, in that it extracts individual follicles directly from the scalp. In FUT hair restoration, the surgeon is required to make a long horizontal incision from the back of the head, or the donor area, and excise a strip of skin. While this allows a large number of follicles to be retrieved at once, the patient is left with a relatively lengthy and noticeable scar, making it difficult to conceal under a shorter haircut.

How does FUE hair restoration work?

During an FUE hair restoration session, which is performed using local anesthesia, Dr. Khorsandi will carefully extract individual grafts of 1-4 hair follicles from the back of your head using the SAFE Graft technology. After Dr. Khorsandi has determined that he has enough grafts to work with, the hair follicles will be precisely placed into the areas where you are experiencing thinning hair, hair loss, or baldness. Dr. Khorsandi takes great care to ensure that the newly placed hair will create a natural look, using grafts of 1-2 follicles around the hairline and reserving the larger units for areas where the hair would naturally be thicker.

How long does an FUE hair transplant session take?

Patients who undergo a hair transplant using follicular unit extraction should expect to spend most of the day at our office. The caring team at VIP Plastic Surgery is committed to making your procedure as comfortable as possible, and will provide you with food and beverages as well as magazines to read and movies to watch during your treatment. The actual length of time that your FUE session will take can vary depending on how many grafts are being taken.

Will I need more than one FUE treatment for hair restoration?

With the time and financial investments that go along with hair restoration, it is only natural for patients to wonder how many FUE sessions may be needed to achieve their goals. The answer will depend on several factors, including the degree of hair loss that is present, a patient’s desired outcome, and his or her tolerance of the procedure. For some patients, 500 grafts may be enough to restore a natural look, while others may require 2000 grafts or more. In general, Dr. Khorsandi is able to harvest and transplant about 2000 grafts in a single FUE session. During your initial consultation, Dr. Khorsandi will be able to more accurately determine how many grafts it may potentially require for you to achieve your ideal look.

Is FUT or FUE hair restoration better?

The main difference between traditional FUT hair restoration, or the “strip” method, and FUE hair transplant lies in the technique used to extract the hair follicles. Both procedures produce the same results with similar success rates, but patients who undergo hair restoration using FUT will be left with a visible scar. FUE hair transplant patients generally heal quickly after their procedure with virtually no evidence of work having been done at the extraction site. In fact, FUE can be used to conceal a scar that was left as a result of a previous FUT hair transplant procedure.

Am I a candidate for FUE hair restoration?

If you are experiencing hair loss and are looking for a way to permanently restore your natural hairline and thickness, FUE hair restoration may be right for you. The procedure is suitable for both men and women.

The best way to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for FUE hair transplant is to be evaluated by a highly trained and experienced plastic surgeon.
