Where Are Rhinoplasty Incisions Made?
5/6/2023
When you are considering any type of cosmetic surgery, especially procedures involving a visible area like the face, you will probably have questions about what type of scarring you may be left with. At VIP Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, NV, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi shares his patient's interest in avoiding visible scarring as much as possible and uses specialized techniques, technologies, and incision placement strategies to keep scarring to a minimum. In this blog, Dr. Khorsandi shares information on where incisions may be placed during one of the most popular cosmetic procedures among patients in Las Vegas — rhinoplasty.
Reasons to get a rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty — or, as many people refer to it, a “nose job” — can be beneficial in many ways, both in terms of creating a more attractive profile and overall appearance as well as enhancing a person’s ability to breathe comfortably and freely. Some of the primary concerns that can be improved or corrected with rhinoplasty include:
- Size of nose
- Shape of nose
- Masculinity/femininity of nose
- Asymmetric nose
- Crooked nose
- Prominent dorsal hump
- Bump in nasal bridge
- Hooked nose
- Upturned nose
- Obstructed nasal breathing
- Deviated septum
- Snoring
What kind of rhinoplasty do I need?
There are several different types of rhinoplasty procedures available today, the most appropriate of which will depend on the patient’s specific concerns, nasal anatomy, and other variables. Furthermore, each rhinoplasty case will be customized to align with these factors. Following your initial consultation and evaluation for Las Vegas rhinoplasty, Dr. Khorsandi may recommend one of the following:
- Traditional rhinoplasty
- Functional rhinoplasty
- Ethnic rhinoplasty
- Revision rhinoplasty
- Turbinectomy
- Septoplasty
Where are incisions made during a nose job?
Rhinoplasty surgery can be performed using either a closed approach, during which all incisions are made within the internal structures and tissues of the nose, or an open approach, which will involve one or more external incisions. This determination between performing an open vs. closed rhinoplasty will be made based on the patient’s specific nasal anatomy and concerns, in addition to other individual factors. Even when an open rhinoplasty is required, the incision is usually located in an inconspicuous area, like the soft tissue that connects the nostrils near the base of the nose.
Will I have a visible scar after rhinoplasty?
In the majority of rhinoplasty cases, patients are satisfied with the appearance of their scar — or lack thereof. For patients who undergo a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nose, so there is no resulting scar on the skin’s surface. When an open rhinoplasty is required, Dr. Khorsandi usually places the incision between the nostrils at the base of the nose, where the resulting scar is tiny and virtually imperceptible — even to the patient.
