Why Dermal Fillers Are Not A Long-Term Solution For Stretched Facial Skin
5/4/2022
Injectable dermal fillers can be fantastic for addressing everything from early volume loss to severe lines and folds across the face. When it comes to firming up stretched-out skin, however, fillers may not be ideal as a long-term solution. At VIP Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, NV, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi and our team of aesthetic experts are proud to offer a diverse selection of both surgical and nonsurgical treatments and procedures to keep patients looking and feeling their best throughout every stage of the aging process. Keep reading to discover how cosmetic injectables can best be used for loose skin and when and why you may need to pivot to another treatment in the future.
What do fillers do?
Most commonly, injectable fillers – like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® – are used to reduce visible signs of aging across the face, such as:
- Circles under the eyes
- Hollow cheeks
- Sunken features
- Thin lips
- Deep lines and wrinkles
- Nasolabial folds
Can fillers tighten loose skin?
Injectable fillers are not specifically designed to be a skin tightening solution, though they may help to fill out loose or deflated features in some cases. For example, sagging or hollow cheeks can often be plumped up with dermal fillers to restore a more youthful look. Additionally, static lines and wrinkles caused by skin laxity are often smoothed with filler injections. However, patients with pronounced skin laxity or stretched skin may be better suited to another treatment.
What is the best treatment for tightening loose facial skin?
The most effective treatment for firming up stretched or loose facial skin will depend primarily on the nature and severity of the patient’s concerns. For early to mild wrinkles or droopiness, injectable fillers may be sufficient. Patients may also benefit from skin rejuvenation treatments – like microneedling – designed to boost the production of collagen and elastin, helping to firm the skin from within. For men and women with more advanced signs of facial aging, facelift surgery or another facial rejuvenation procedure may be an appropriate option.
Can fillers stretch out your skin?
Over time, using fillers may stretch the skin, which can leave patients with saggy and deflated features should they stop using fillers. This applies more specifically, however, to patients with poor skin elasticity and/or those who use an excessive volume of fillers. During your initial consultation for injectable dermal fillers in Las Vegas, Dr. Khorsandi will evaluate your areas of concern, assess your skin elasticity, discuss your desired outcome, and determine if and how fillers may work for you. By using an appropriate amount of filler in features with good remaining skin elasticity, patients can avoid unwanted skin stretching.
After many years (or even decades) of filler use, it may be appropriate to consider a more invasive facial rejuvenation procedure to combat any skin stretching that may have occurred due to filler use and/or the natural aging process.
