The rhinoplasty or nose job is one of the most popular and common cosmetic procedures in the world. It’s a procedure that has existed for hundreds of years. Modern medical techniques have only served to make it easier and more effective. Although rhinoplasties are necessary to repair birth defects or a deviated septum, many people get elective rhinoplasties like a nose job.

Minimal Pain

Most patients are surprised to learn that rhinoplasty surgery doesn’t cause a significant amount of pain.  In fact most patients are able to recover using over the counter anti-inflammatory medications without the need for stronger narcotic medications.  The biggest complaint patients have in the immediate post op period is the sense of stuffiness due to the nasal packing that is used.   After a few days the packing and/or splint(s) are removed and patients can return to light activity, work, and school.

A Less Invasive Procedure

While incisions are part of nearly every surgical procedure, modern rhinoplasty techniques were developed to make the operation less invasive.  Typically, in “open rhinoplasty” the only visible incision is a tiny incision at the base of nose.  While, the “closed rhinoplasty” technique keeps all incisions within the nostril and is sometimes called the endonasal approach.   This approach is used when there is minimal tip work to be done.  With either approach the incisions are designed to minimize visible signs of surgery.

These factors have all contributed to the popularity of rhinoplasties. Still, the biggest reason people go under the knife is because the procedure works. When an experienced plastic surgeon performs a nose job, the results of the rhinoplasty are often predictable, making it one of the most effective and reliable ways to improve one’s appearance and self-esteem.
