Will Rhinoplasty Make My Nose Look Bigger?

By: Dr. Christopher Khorsandi

3/5/2021

Because the nose is such a prominent feature of the face, being unhappy with the appearance of your nose can be particularly discouraging. For this reason, rhinoplasty surgery is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries among men and women of virtually all ages, ethnicities, and walks of life. Rhinoplasty also offers patients who struggle with obstructed breathing or other functional abnormalities an effective and long-lasting solution for symptom relief. However, some patients are hesitant to undergo nasal surgery for fear that their noses may look larger or unnatural after the procedure.

Acclaimed board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi and the expert team at VIP Plastic Surgery understand these concerns and are committed to helping patients achieve their ideal results with rhinoplasty in Las Vegas, NV. Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can be an incredibly beneficial procedure for virtually anyone who is unhappy with the appearance and/or function of their nose. Patients considering rhinoplasty in Las Vegas should be in good health, nonsmokers, have a fully developed nose, and have realistic expectations for their results. Some of the most frequently cited concerns that lead men and women to pursue rhinoplasty include:

  • Size of nose
  • Nose shape
  • Bump in bridge of nose
  • Crooked nose
  • Trauma to nose (broken nose)
  • Deviated septum
  • Nostril size
  • Unappealing facial proportions
  • Upturned nose
  • Previously botched nose job
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Snoring
  • Sleep disruption

Depending on your specific concerns and goals, Dr. Khorsandi may recommend one of several different types of rhinoplasty surgeries, such as:

How long is rhinoplasty recovery time?

The majority of patients feel comfortable and ready to return to work about 7 – 10 days after the procedure, by which time a great deal of the postoperative swelling and bruising should have resolved. However, strenuous exercise and other activities should be restricted for up to 4 – 6 weeks, or until cleared by Dr. Khorsandi. Helpful tips on what to do and what not to do during rhinoplasty recovery include:

  • Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated
  • Use cold compresses carefully
  • Do not put any direct pressure on your nose
  • Do not wear glasses or sunglasses
  • Do not pull shirts or clothing directly over your head/nose
  • Avoid blowing your nose
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Stay hydrated
  • Take medications as prescribed
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Attend all follow-up appointments

Why does my nose look bigger after rhinoplasty?

It is not uncommon for patients to feel that their nose looks slightly larger after rhinoplasty. This can be somewhat frightening, particularly for patients whose primary concern was having a large nose to begin with. Keep in mind that postoperative swelling is a normal and expected part of rhinoplasty recovery and is likely responsible for the temporary and artificial change in your nose size after surgery. In the majority of cases, visible swelling resolves after several weeks. While some patients may experience mild swelling that lasts up to 12 months, this is typically only noticeable to the patients themselves.

How long does nose tip swelling after rhinoplasty last?

Another common culprit of increased nose size after rhinoplasty is prolonged swelling of the nasal tip. Because the skin and tissues in the tip of the nose are often much thicker than on the nasal bridge, it typically takes longer for swelling to subside in this area. This can create the illusion of a disproportionate and/or large nose. Rest assured, however, that your new nose shape will begin to materialize within a few weeks or a month as nose tip swelling resolves.
