What Is Laser Tattoo Removal?
While many people get a tattoo with the intention of keeping it forever, laser tattoo removal allows people to change their minds. Our laser tattoo removal systems at VIP Plastic Surgery can erase all sizes and colors of tattoos at any location on your body or face. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi has invested in two Cynosure laser tattoo removal systems (the PicoSure® and the RevLite™ SI) at his Las Vegas, NV practice. Why? These laser systems are the fastest and most effective for tattoo removal while causing minimal discomfort for the patient.

how does laser tattoo removal work?
During the procedure, the area where the tattoo exists on the skin is first sterilized before the laser is applied. Numbing cream may be applied to reduce the snapping effect of the laser beams. The duration of treatment may last for a few minutes for small tattoos, but for larger tattoos, the treatment times will be much longer. A laser handpiece is guided on the surface of the area for treatment. There is no downtime, and post-treatment care is minimal. The patient must keep the treated area moist and covered with a protective dressing. Almost all patients require multiple visits, and this process will be repeated each time until the ink has diminished and the tattoo is gone.
Will the laser COMPLETELY remove MY TATTOO?
Patients should always maintain realistic expectations when it comes to laser tattoo removal. Even in the best cases, it is unlikely that your tattoo will become entirely invisible because there is usually some residual ink remaining. The results depend on the intensity of the tattoo ink and the patient’s skin reaction to treatment. For example, black and blue ink often respond very well to laser tattoo removal, while green, light blue, and neon colors are more difficult. However, you can expect to experience a dramatic reduction in the visibility of your tattoo until it's barely noticeable.
How long is the recovery time for a laser treatment?
After a laser tattoo removal treatment, you may experience swelling, redness, and irritation with blistering and scabbing. It can be uncomfortable, but keeping the area clean and well cared for in addition to taking pain relievers and using ice packs can help. Depending on the area treated and the size of the tattoo, you can expect to be healed in about four to six weeks. You can shower about two to three hours after your treatment, but it is not recommended to allow the shower stream to directly hit your treated area. You should avoid swimming, hot tubs, and taking a bath until the blistering and scabbing have healed.
Lasers for tattoo Removal
Cynosure’s newest Alexandrite laser, PicoSure, is named after the picosecond (one-trillionth of a second), which is how fast it emits short pulses of light energy. The PicoSure can remove tattoo ink faster than other lasers, but it works best on lighter skin tones.
The RevLite SI uses a Nd:YAG laser for tattoo removal. The RevLite is best at removing tattoo pigments from dark skin tones. The RevLite may also be used for laser skin resurfacing and other skin treatments.
Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ
how much does laser tattoo removal cost?
Each treatment of laser tattoo removal costs $500-$2,000 depending on the length of the session. Dr. Khorsandi will talk to each patient during the initial consultation about their treatment plan and reasonable expectations.
Is laser tattoo removal better than other treatments?
There are several alternatives to remove tattoos but mostly by invasive means of skin excision to remove the layers where the ink penetrated. Chemical peels and dermabrasion may also be performed to scrape the upper layers of the skin and help with skin regeneration that will make the ink disappear. The obvious disadvantage of these options over laser treatment is that any of these may eventually lead to scarring. With laser tattoo removal, you don't have these concerns.
How Many laser Sessions will i need?
The number of treatments may range from 2 – 15 depending on the size, age, and location of the tattoo. Skin condition is also considered a factor. The treatments are spaced between 4 – 7 weeks to give the area time to recover before the succeeding laser treatment. Dr. Khorsandi will be able to give the estimated number of sessions during the initial check.
