Patients at VIP Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, NV, who have turbinate hypertrophy, a condition where the turbinates are swollen, experience constricted nasal breathing, chronic sinus infections, sleep apnea, and nosebleeds. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi performs an inferior turbinate reduction, or turbinectomy, to reduce airway resistance and decrease a turbinates’ size. After a turbinectomy, the small structures within the nose will be able to pass air safely through the nostril to the lungs.
Surgical Technique
As a stand-alone procedure, a turbinectomy is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The incisions are placed inside the nose so that the surgeon can use an endoscope and other surgical techniques with accuracy and precision. After the underlying bone and turbinate are removed or reduced, the surgeon will close the incision with sutures. Some surgeons may also use radio frequency trimming (diathermy) to decrease the size of the turbinate.

Met with Dr. Khorsandi to discuss a revision rhino/septoplasty with turbinate reduction. That he would consider even meeting to discuss a revision rhinoplasty was encouraging. During the consult, the 3D images of what my nose could look like were exciting, and Dr. Khorsandi's bedside manners were second to none. On Christmas Eve I had my surgery, and Dr. Khorsandi came in to the office on Christmas Day for my 24 hour post-op. I literally kept asking his staff "are you SURE I have an appointment on Christmas Day???" His work ethic and commitment to his patients is refreshing- no big ego, just a doc that loves what he does. I'm now 3 weeks post-op, and beyond thrilled with the results. My nose looks incredible, I don't look like I've had a "nose job", it's completely perfect for my face. Could.not.be.happier!!!

Best Experience with Rhino/septoplasty - I had a septo/rhinoplasty and turbinate reduction in July and I am one month out healing and feeling great! After having a deviated septum my entire life, I am amazed at my results cosmetically and most importantly I can breathe!! I only wish I would have done this way sooner. During/After Surgery
For the first few days after surgery, patients will experience a bloody discharge, swelling and bruising. They should subside after 2-3 weeks, and a normal breathing pattern should begin to take effect. Patients also begin to breathe easier, sleep well and experience less sinus problems.
Expected Cost
Because inferior turbinate reduction is a complicated procedure, the cost of the surgery can run higher than most procedures. Patients can expect to pay between $10,000 and $15,000; however, some medical insurance companies may cover a portion of the costs. Patients are encouraged to ask about to their insurance coverage policy prior to the surgery to get a better estimate of the total cost. Virtual consultations are $100 and in-person consults $300 the consult fee goes towards the procedure they are non-refundable.

Diathermy or Surgery?
A turbinectomy’s surgical technique will depend on the complexity of the patient’s medical condition. The surgeon will be able to give a full assessment of the patient’s nasal condition and determine the best surgical technique after the consultation exam.
Back to Normal?
The results from an inferior turbinate reduction will settle a month after surgery. Patients will notice normal breathing, sleeping and sinus functions after the swelling and bruising subside.
Will I Look the Same?
A turbinectomy improves the internal function of the nose. However, it may slightly slim the nose if a lot of swollen turbinates are reduced. Patients wanting to significantly improve the outward appearance of their nose should consider rhinoplasty.
