Overview

For many patients in Las Vegas, loose skin and excess fat in the abdomen remain constant sources of frustration and embarrassment. Redundant skin and fat may appear despite regular exercise and a reasonable diet. Pregnancy and major weight loss in both men and women can change the abdomen’s appearance in a less than desirable way. A tummy tuck (also known as abdominoplasty) is Dr. Christopher Khorsandi’s solution to this problem. As its name indicates, abdominoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall.

Surgical Technique

Prior to surgery, Dr. Khorsandi will review the plan with the patient during consultation exams. Before the surgery, he will outline the incision marks, taking into account the patient’s preferred underwear and swimsuit style. During the surgery, excess skin and fat from the abdominal wall will be removed while the muscles are tightened with permanent sutures. These sutures will act as in internal girdle and flatten the stomach. While excess skin is trimmed away, excess areas, such as the pubic area, may need liposuction. The belly button will be delivered through an incision, and the upper tissue will be brought down to meet the new waistline. Drains will be placed, and sometimes, a pain pump may be added for postoperative pain control.

During/After Surgery

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Most patients can return to light activity after 7-14 days. Patients should not drive while taking pain medications. Strenuous exercise may not be performed until Dr. Khorsandi clears the patient, which usually occurs 6-8 weeks after surgery. Sit-ups and crunches are discouraged in the first several months after surgery to minimize the risk of breaking the abdominal-tightening sutures. The abdominal tissues will feel tight for at least 1-2 months, which is totally normal. Patients may experience some numbness and tingling in the abdominal area. Scars will typically continue to fade for 2 years.

Expected Cost

The price for abdominoplasty depends on various factors, including the primary technique and the size of the area being treated. Generally, patients can expect to pay between $7,000 and $12,500 for a tummy tuck procedure.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

How Big Will My Scar Be?

Unlike liposuction, where scars are usually small, abdominoplasty surgery requires a much larger incision. The length of the scar is determined by the nature of the deformity. Patients with significant excess skin will require a scar from hip to hip and a scar around the belly button.

What Is A Mini-Abdominoplasty?

Patients with a small amount of excess skin and limited muscle laxity that is confined below the belly button may be candidates for a mini-abdominoplasty. These patients will have a scar that is only somewhat longer than a typical C-Section or hysterectomy scar (about the width of your two hands placed side-by-side.) No scar is placed around the belly button. This procedure is designed in an effort to treat less severe cases.

More Women Than Men?

Women tend to undergo tummy tucks more commonly than men due to the effects of pregnancy and childbirth. During pregnancy, women often stretch their abdominal tissues as the child grows. Following childbirth, these tissues often fail to go back to their normal appearance, leaving many women with stretch marks, loose skin, and bulging abdomen. A tummy tuck can help restore the abdominal tone, reduce stretch marks and trim excess skin.

Is A Tummy Tuck Right For Me?

All surgical procedures have inherent risks, benefits and limitations. Dr. Khorsandi wants his patients to feel comfortable in their decision. We encourage patients to ask questions so that they don’t feel any hesitations.
