What is Dermaplaning?

If skin treatments like microdermabrasion and facials are no longer giving you the results you want, but you are not ready for lasers and more invasive procedures, consider dermaplaning skin resurfacing. Dermaplaning is an exciting cosmetic procedure and facial rejuvenation treatment that smoothes the surface of your skin by removing dead skin cells and fine facial hair for a softer, healthier look. Also known as dermablading, this procedure is performed with a dermablade and a careful scraping techniques. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Khorsandi is thrilled to offer dermaplaning skin treatments at VIP Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, NV. Dermaplaning is very popular these days because it is nonsurgical and able to provide beautiful, smooth skin safely and efficiently.

Do I qualify for dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning treatments are a safe and effective skin treatment for nearly all skin tones. Those suffering from severe acne should discuss their skin condition with our team beforehand. The best candidates for a dermaplaning treatment:

  • Are seeking an alternative to chemical peels and microdermabrasion
  • Have fine facial hair
  • Do not suffer from a skin condition such as rosacea
  • Do not have sensitive skin

Procedure Technique

Dermaplane treatments are performed in our office as an outpatient procedure. While you relax in a comfortable treatment chair, a numbing cream or topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area. After cleaning the skin well, the procedure will begin with a careful skimming of the surface of the face with a blade-like scalpel. The technician will scrape the treatment area many times until the needed areas have been evenly treated. The procedure time will vary depending on whether part of or the entire face is being treated. During your consultation, Dr. Khorsandi will help you to understand the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

Following the exfoliation

After your dermaplaning session, you should expect your face to look slightly red and feel sensitive to the touch. These are normal side effects that will subside in the coming hours and days. It is common for tiny scabs to occur on the skin as the skin heals, but it is important not to pull them off.  Sun exposure should be avoided since the skin will continue to be sensitive for a few days. Patients can expect results quickly since dermaplaning reveals softer, smoother skin immediately. To help you protect your refreshed skin, the technician will discuss an improved skincare routine with you, including the regular application of sunscreen.

Dermaplaning FAQ

How much does dermaplaning cost?
The cost of your dermaplaning treatment depends on several factors, including the facility fees, the number of sessions, and if we combine it with other skin care procedures. Our team can develop a strategy that outlines your costs and the goals you hope to achieve during a consultation.

Does dermaplaning hurt?
Dermaplaning is a nonsurgical treatment option that addresses the top layers of your skin. It can hurt if you do not perform the procedure right, which is why we highly recommend letting a professional handle the treatment. Using a fine blade, we gently scrape it over your complexion. During this process, it helps remove damaged skin cells and vellus hair (often called peach fuzz) for brighter-looking and refreshed skin.

Will my hair grow back thicker?
No, the vellus hair or the superfine, light-colored hair on your face does not grow back thicker when removed. It will not impact your natural hair production.
